Sometimes it's the little things that are the problem

I was on the return leg on a recent cruise and tied up to a dock for a change to recharge the battery bank. The four 8A4D AGM batteries initially charged up fine. But, by morning one of them only showed a charge of 30%. In the back of my mind I thought it might be a battery failure, but, happily it turned out to to be just a loose connection on a fuse.…See More

Sevcon Millipak 8 flash error code

My 2008 SolidNav Explorer has been cutting back to 1/2 power from time to time, for over a year. If I am going anywhere I do not use that much power anyway so the issue has not been a problem but I do want to fix it. Today I checked for an error code and I am getting 8 flashes on my Sevcon MiliPac when it cuts back. The code is an over heat indication and I know it isn't overheating because it can happen seconds after throttling up. Any thoughts out there? Thanks, MarkSee More

Can someone walk me through solar?

Our boat has a Solidnav Explorer, with a 48v four AGM bank. The goal is to install solar in the hopes of extending our time off shore power. An electrician I certainly am not. After much study, and discussions here and there with many helpful individuals, I felt I had a good handle on what was needed and what to do. Now, I'm not so sure. An install is defined by the small details, and those small details are what I'm unsure of.I did take the step of ordering a Rogue 3048 MPPT, and will be…See More

Hi All,So glad to have found this site. I am the second owner of a pocket cruising sailboat, 1971 HavsFidra I from Sweden. My Volvo MD-1 has died again. While mulling over what to do I ran across Captain Mike's blog entries documenting in great detail the process he followed to re-power his Nonsuch 30 with inboard electric. This seemed like it might be a good fit for Lilliiput.Original literature says displacement was 2970 lbs., 1100 ballast, LOA 20, LWL16'5". First owner updated those numbers…See More

First test run

Had the first test run of our 52' ketch under electric power. Although it was only a short run around the marina, all systems performed extremely well. Much more control with lower revs possible. Minimum revs with the old diesel were 210 at the prop which equated to 3 knots. Now I can get the prop down to 50rpm. More control in reverse with the slower prop revs also.Looking forward to installing a generator which will allow us to venture out for a few days and give her a real test run.See More
