How to add to "Electric Fleet"

A quick question.  How do I add a page to the "Electric Fleet" section?  I would like to post the stories and pictures of my 16 years cruising in electric dories.   There was nothing obvious on the page that says join the electric fleet. Is the "electric fleet" page different from the BLOG section? I am not very computer savy.  I get lost navigating through all these pages.  I am still in the slide rule age, and my kids are going to college so I have no one at home to help me.TomSee More

Comparison of the lifetime cost of batteries

For those of you just starting out in this “brave new world” of electric power I would like to share some of the information I have collected during the 16 years I have been cruising in an electric boat and four years driving an electric vehicle. Today’s “seminar” is on the cost of batteries.  This type of information was not readily available when I started out, so I hope you will find it useful as you explore this great new way to travel. When I started doing these calculations I was surprised…See More

There have been a number questions about batteries and their use.  Much of the information I have been posting here comes from a web site called Battery University.  This is an extensive site with all kinds of information, more than you ever wanted.  However, it does contain a lot of basic information that can help you make decisions about your needs.  I have found it quite useful if you take time to navigate through all their pages.  Best, however, is that it is not full of ads or pop ups. The…See More

Problems with compass under electric power

I have a problem when cruising under electric power.  All that current throught the wires cause my compass to go haywire.  I cannot navigate with a compass and have to rely on my GPS for direction.  The compass drifts all over and changes direction as I change the current to the motors.I was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem and come up with a solution. Is there anyway to shield the compass? My boat is relatively small, so the distance between the batteries/cables and compass is at…See More

I built my first electric dory 16 years ago and am building my third one now.
It's a Glen-L "Lucky Pierre" and we use it every summer to cruise the San Juan.

Hi Tom,

Thank you! I am very interested in building an electric vehicle. I have just recently changed jobs and now have a 4.7 mile commute with trips needing to be made during the day. I have been looking into over unity power as well.

Talk to you soon,

Tony

SolidNav UpDate and GEN4 Converstion

I bought David Carrolls Catalina 30 with the SolidNav Explorer in it that didn't work. It was giving the 3 blinks code on the LED flash and sometimes 4 blinks on the LED flash.I called Thunder Struck Motors who are extremely smart and helpful people and talked to them about what would be  the best route to take to fix the system. After exploring all options. I decided to buy a brand new GEN4 Controller, the wiring harness, and the new style better throttle control and have it all programmed…See More

Helm Instrumentation Project

Recently I built a helm instrumentation panel so I could keep and eye on battery voltages and current draw on the propulsion bank without leaving the helm while underway. It worked out pretty good though I still have to mount it permanently. The links to the process I went through are here:http://biankablog.blogspot.com/2013/02/instrumentation-project-part-one-plan-a.html…See More

I'm thinking of manufacturing some electric outboards

Greetings everyoneYes as stated I'm thinking of starting a small, made to order electric outboardmotor company.I want to keep it simple and inexpensive as well as versatile and user friendly.I have been watching the industry for a while and there seems to be more and moreunits coming available. Most are unrealistic in pricing but understandable as it isthought to be a new industry. The reasoning for this idea is that I am converting 4 boats at this moment to run on electricityand what is…See More
