AC or DC motors which is most efficent

I'm building a Kahuna Nui pilothouse cutter and want to install electric rather than a diesel engine. The plans call for a 38 hp beta marine. So I'm researching options.question:1. AC or DC motors which is most efficient?2.Belt drive or direct gear driven?3. AC or DC motors which has better re-generation?JeffSee More

From The Beginning

Hi, I am a new member.  I sail a 1980 Ericson 25+.  LOA 25.5; displacement 5000 lb., fractional rig, sloop.  Until a couple of years ago, my aux. power was small, stock Volvo/Penta, with a saildrive.  When my motor seized, I got an outboard 9.9 and hung it off the back, which is not pretty, and interferes with swim ladder; must be removed when on mooring for a variety of reasons; and prop exposed in Buzzards Bay seas sometimes.  I sail out of New Bedford.  I am planning on taking the…See More

Why 48 volt motors?

I've noticed the majority of vendors base their EP motors on 48 volts, how come?I saw a Greenstar Marine product at the Portland boat show & the size 10 motor was 24 volts, their larger motor was 48. I think Mastervolt also has a 24 v motor in the smaller size also. That got me to thinking why 48 volts? Is it because golf cart motors are 48 & that became the starting point for recreational EP?  If you could find/get a motor that ran on 24 volts, it would be far easier to have a larger…See More

New to electric seas and electric boating

Hi group,This is our first post, so a brief introduction:We just bought a 43 foot catamaran with twin solomon drives. 5kw each.We are used to old honest yanmar diesels, so this electric propulsion is quite new for us.Also we have not a fully understanding of the system so we will run into technical questions.Hopefully this group can help us out a little. We will share of course on how we fare with this new direction.cheers, PepSee More

Awsome weekend

Got out for 3 days done about 30 miles under power @ 35amps 4 kts average Got in some good sail time sill working on the regen I am only getting about 2 amps @ 5.5-6 kts got to work on this still its better than nothing. Got to run the EU2000 (about 2 or 3 hours total) to run the chargers and fix dinners as all my cooking is electric also cooking with the inverter eats a lot of power and I am pretty sure I would have to cover at least 2 boats with panels to keep up works pretty good for coffee…See More
