Sailors Keep Our Waters Blue by Learning to Boat Green

Featured in the American Sailing Journal, Summer 2011

Is it safe to say that we became boaters because we love being out on the water? We don’t have to be reminded about how wonderful it is to go sailing, fishing or diving from our boats in a healthy marine environment, or how sad it is to see trash on the beach or oil on the water. The idea of Green Boating stems from our natural instinct to protect what we cherish. It is not a new fad, but an attitude that translates into behaviors that reflect our values.

Green Boating doesn’t have to be a sacrifice. In fact, what I’ve discovered on my boat is that going green has made my overall boating experience safer, more comfortable and…

Innovanautic Inspires Europe With Molten Salt Powered Electric Sailing Yacht | Electric Seas

It is understood that the disadvantage of electric propulsion systems is the limited range of the batteries. Because of this, a lot of attention and hope is on the evolution of battery technology. There are a lot of battery designs in use, with the most common being some type of lead- acid, nickel cadmium or lithium ion, each with their advantages and disadvantages but none so far representing the breakthrough that could truly revolutionize electric power storage. But what if you could turn the conventional thinking about batteries upside down and envision an energy storage system that was unlike any "battery" that you have ever seen?

Does a device that holds electric charge have to use rare or expensive materials to act as an electrolyte? Does it have to be extremely heavy? Does it have to operate…

Introducing the Zen 24: Electric Powered Sailboat From Japan | Electric Seas

At the annual meeting of American Sailing Association (ASA) affiliates in Las Vegas from March 4-6, 2011, Guinness Book Record circumnavigator and President of ASA Japan, Yoh Aoki unveiled the latest technological wonder from Japan: the Zen 24. Designed by Yoh Aoki and the renowned Japanese naval architect, Yokoyama, the Zen 24 is believed to be the first mid 20 ft "pocket cruiser" which is marketed, designed and optimized for inboard electric auxiliary propulsion. The design, based on the popular Ahodori 24 in Japan has a unique hull shape that allows the boat to reach hull speed quickly in light air, while also remaining stable in heavy conditions. The boat is also designed to balance easily under sail, making the boat easy to handle, which makes the boat suitable for beginners and experts alike. The…

Greg,

In answer to your question:

http://issuu.com/proptalk/docs/dec_pt_2012 see pp 39-42

This is an article in the Dec 2012 PropTalk magazine, the powerboat mag for the Chesapeake Bay area. It was written by one of the contestants, Charlie Iliff.

Anyone with an electric boat that can go 24 miles in less than 6 hours without recharging is invited to attend.

There is also a great article on the 2011 race in the English mag, Electric Boat News Autumn 2012 written by Jim Campbell of eCanoe.

The race is sponsored by the Electric Boat Association of America. It is held on the Friday before the Small Craft Festival of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum, about Oct. 1.

We would love to have you here.

I am new to this sort of page so I do not know how to keep things organized. I posted a video of the race on my "page".

Hi Greg, thanks for the profile comment.  Like others here, I am wrestling with questions of propellers and battery packs for my 8m sloop.  I'll post more when things have become a bit clearer.  Best regards, - Martin

Hi Greg,

Thanks for the note. Sure thing put me up on the Electric Wall you mentioned.

I don't have a lot of time on the net so I may be a bit scarce here but I am always willing to answer questions or discuss my experiences as I am able.

Hi Greg, Thanks for the welcome. I've got some questions.

First of all, I am reclaiming a 32ft Nantucket Clipper after she was stripped and left in a barn for 10 years. The old Sabb diesel is out and in my garage. My thinking is that I keep the underpowered diesel cause it sounds like the engine in African Queen and is miserly on diesel or repower. As I look at the electric option I am finding that I could get more thrust from an electric than the 10 hp diesel and not gain more weight or much more. The Sabb weighs 450 lbs + fuel and extras.

Now I'm looking at motors and controlers to put together a DIY system so I'm looking for answers to selection questions. I'll ask them in the forum but will involve things like are the rated RPMs for a motor and indication effect on regeration. I'm also interested in linking a drag generator with solar panels and wind gen and emergency back up organic burner. My goal is for long term livaboard cruising. A passage through the Panama Canal and as far as it is fun. I think I can enjoy myself more if I'm free from paying tolls to oil companies not to mention being a good human and not messing up our home.

Nice to meet you Greg,

Walter Graupner

Hello Greg, thank you for the welcome and for your comment.  As yet, most of our products are not available to purchase, however we are working with several companies developing battery systems for their products.  We will keep you informed with updates and thank you for your interest in OXIS Energy.

Hi Greg, thanks for the welcome. I just received "everything" for  my Electric Yacht motor install. Let the fun begin. It's actually an EY system paired with a Sillette saildrive. I'll be sure to join the EY sub-group.

SolidNav UpDate and GEN4 Converstion

I bought David Carrolls Catalina 30 with the SolidNav Explorer in it that didn't work. It was giving the 3 blinks code on the LED flash and sometimes 4 blinks on the LED flash.I called Thunder Struck Motors who are extremely smart and helpful people and talked to them about what would be  the best route to take to fix the system. After exploring all options. I decided to buy a brand new GEN4 Controller, the wiring harness, and the new style better throttle control and have it all programmed…See More

Helm Instrumentation Project

Recently I built a helm instrumentation panel so I could keep and eye on battery voltages and current draw on the propulsion bank without leaving the helm while underway. It worked out pretty good though I still have to mount it permanently. The links to the process I went through are here:http://biankablog.blogspot.com/2013/02/instrumentation-project-part-one-plan-a.html…See More

I'm thinking of manufacturing some electric outboards

Greetings everyoneYes as stated I'm thinking of starting a small, made to order electric outboardmotor company.I want to keep it simple and inexpensive as well as versatile and user friendly.I have been watching the industry for a while and there seems to be more and moreunits coming available. Most are unrealistic in pricing but understandable as it isthought to be a new industry. The reasoning for this idea is that I am converting 4 boats at this moment to run on electricityand what is…See More
